The Café Carpe is a restaurant, bar, and music club in downtown Fort Atkinson, a city of 12,000 in southeastern Wisconsin- 35 miles southeast of Madison, 60ish miles southwest of Milwaukee, 20 miles northeast of Janesville, about 6900 miles west of Baghdad. Fort Atkinson is noted for being the birthplace of Peter Urban, the site where  Jeffrey Foucault cut some of his musical teeth on a few bottles of beer, the place immortalized by poet Lorine Niedecker a place rich in history.  The Carpe has been here since 1985.  Yikes.

For those curious about the restaurant and bar offerings, please peruse the menu.  Our kitchen is small, and has its limitations, but the food is in large part homemade- our own soups, salad dressings, salsa, iced tea, desserts,  entrees, sauces, some breads- and passes the tasty test. We feature local & regional microbrews on tap.  We have a commitment to being environmentally friendly.  We try to be  friendly, too.

The Carpe has a talk-free, smoke-free listening room separate from its main bar-dining area.  The room, which has great acoustics, seats 60 people comfortably but can hold 70 people who are enthralled enough by a performance that they only almost forget they are sweaty, their butts hurt, and the personal space alloted to them is not big enough.

Shows are primarily on the weekend nights, and there is a cover charge for all performances except the periodic open stages. Reservations (920-563- 9391) are recommended for all shows, and may be necessary for some. For a few shows, tickets are sold in advance, and there is the occasional advance sellout. Do not drive from Chicago (or any other location, in case any of you read literally) without calling first to see if the show you wish to attend is, in fact, already sold out, or has been cancelled.

We have a Facebook page.  You could become a fan.
